‘Day To Day’ is the second single and closing track from London based Indie-Pop 4 piece Tugboat Captain’s debut studio album, ‘Rut’, due out this October via Double A-Side Records. Originally released in demo form as part of the band’s SXSW fundraising efforts, Day To Day now appears as a fully blown studio recording, featuring strings, brass and guest vocals from Flirting’s Poppy Waring. With some of Alexander Sokolow’s strongest lyrical turns to date, Day To Day is a dry and fatalistic anthem for Gen-Z apathy, addressing the reduced-to-clear section of the supermarket and the impossibility of getting on the property ladder. Musically the track is what is now signature Tugboat Captain - toeing the line between the twee influences of the DIY Indie-Pop scene and the bombastic ambitions of classic rock. With their ramshackle orchestra of friends in tow, the band continue to channel modern day ennui in ways that are uniquely their own on Day To Day.
lyrics
I’ve been trying to live up to expectations
That were set when I was far more patient
And I could dream above my station
Now I’m in the supermarket
Buying food that’s clearly past it
Whatever is reduced
Is keeping me amused
I’ll set the bar pretty low
Each day’s a success if I can pay for my own smokes
And I am resigned to never own my home
I’m not designed for hope
I’m not designed for hope
I know it’s depressing
But there’s matters far more pressing
Like the fact I haven’t got clean clothes
The trash goes out today, I know
Now I’m sitting on the sofa
Wishing that you would lean over
And tell me it’s okay
Now the sky is grey
I’ll set the bar pretty low
Each day’s a success if I can pay for my own smokes
And I am resigned to never own my home
I’m not designed for hope
I’m not designed for hope
I’m not designed for hope
I’m not designed for hope
Keep your success
I guess I’ll confess
I’m living day to day
I’ll get some rest
Until I’m at my best
Or I just feel okay
God I’m depressed
I guess it’s just a test
To see what I can take
Don’t think any less
Of me if I’m a mess
I’m living day to day
